After 5 years away the Joe Kay Trophy comes home to Borehamwood

Harrow chairman Alan Morgan presents the trophy to Borehamwood chairman Paul Fitzjohn

By Breda Quirke, Publicity Officer

On Monday 23 January 2006 at Harrow Arts Centre, Hatch End, Harrow, Borehamwood Camcorder Club brought home the Joe Kay Trophy after winning it from Harrow Cine and Video Society. This is an annual competition between the two clubs, which Borehamwood last won in 2001.

Each club presents a programme of films lasting no more than 40 minutes. The judges are members of the public with no knowledge of filmmaking, as the competition is judged on entertainment value alone. Each club nominates two judges. The judges were Keith Alsop and Jack Wells (Harrow), and Alan Lawrence and Bob Redman (Borehamwood).

Harrow's programme:

  • Venetian Trio by Tony Jessop

  • Monarch of Meccano by Aivar Kaulins

  • Swiss Interlude by Ludwig Levy

  • Musical Spectacular by Wallace Jacobs

Borehamwood's programme:

  • Kites by Roy Osgood

  • The Universal Picture Club Production, directed by Paul Fitzjohn

  • Into the Badlands by Michael Murphy

  • Grand Junction 90 by Steve Pemberton and Breda Quirke

  • Loro Parque by Peter and Barbara Norman

Three of Joe Kay's films (Monday Morning, Kaleidoscope and Jam Session) were also shown.

Would you like to have your film represent Borehamwood and help us keep the trophy next year? Join us in Room 3, The Community Centre, Allum House, Allum Lane. We meet on Monday nights at 8pm. The competition is held in memory of Joe Kay, who was a member of Edgware Amateur Cine Society in the 1960s. He was well known for his entertaining films. After his death in 1968 Borehamwood and District 8mm Cine Club (as we were known then) presented the club with a trophy in his honour, to be competed for annually. The first competition was held in Edgware on Wed 30 April 1969. Due to the closure of Edgware Amateur Cine Society most of its members joined Harrow Cine Society (now Harrow Cine and Video Society) in 1995. As a result of this Harrow agreed to continue with the competition.
